Thomas Mayo says Australia has gone ‘backwards’ since Voice referendum

Labor members are considering a change to the party’s stance on the Uluru Statement from the Heart, including removing support for a truth-telling commission.

At the 50th annual federal Labor conference, members will be considering social policies, including their positions on Indigenous rights issues.

A draft proposal is being considered to change their current support for constitutional recognition and establishing a Makarrata commission to support the statement “in principle”.

Thomas Mayo, a signatory to the Uluru Statement, has reiterated his call for a national truth-telling commission and says the federal government needs to do more to act on the needs of First Nations communities.

“There needs to be a Makarrata commission, there needs to be national coordination on truth-telling and agreement-making,” he said.

The Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal and Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man said that racism has worsened since the 2023 referendum on the Voice to Parliament and that it is a concern that the country has “somewhat gone backwards” on Indigenous issues since then.
