As efforts to end the war in Ukraine continue, questions remain over who will help shape any future peace agreement. Nordic leaders have spoken directly with Vladimir Putin, while reports suggest that a new round of talks in Abu Dhabi could take place without European participation.
“Europe and Ukraine are trying to play their own game in this very complex negotiation process,” says Marta Shokalo, Editor-in-Chief of BBC News Ukrainian, in News in Depth. However, she argues that there is no genuine peace process yet, describing the current situation as little more than a “dance” around potential negotiations.
According to Shokalo, Russia’s bombing of the railway station in Dnipro while simultaneously talking about peace is nothing new for Putin. “It is a demonstration of strength,” she says.
