The forgotten white people: Sonskyn Hoekie, a white informal settlement in Pretoria

Inside Sonskyn Hoekie: A White Informal Settlement in Pretoria

On the outskirts of Pretoria is a white informal settlement called Sonskyn Hoekie, home to 20 unemployed families. They don’t have water or electricity. They rely on candles for light and cook their food outside.

Meet the Duvenhage family, who have lived here for nearly 30 years without basic services. Wimpie, 24, has never switched on a TV or had a hot shower – this is the only life he’s ever known. Despite the challenges, he fixes cars to survive and charges his phone with an old solar panel.

This hidden community challenges what most people think poverty looks like in South Africa. Families here carry water 5km from a fire station and live in houses with collapsed ceilings, yet they maintain hope for a better future.

A rare glimpse into one of South Africa’s forgotten communities.
