The night was filled with sparkle and colours, but it was also a sombre tone as tributes were paid for the victims of the Bondi terror attack.
Thousands of people also gathered in Melbourne to bring in the New Year there.
Docklands and Flagstaff Gardens were packed with families from early afternoon as they sought the best spot in the city to witness the fireworks spectacle.
