Suffolk’s Top 20 Water Users Pumped Over 1 Billion Gallons From Long Island’s Aquifer

More than 1 billion gallons of water were pumped from Long Island’s aquifer by just 20 of Suffolk County Water Authority’s largest commercial customers in 2025. 💧

The biggest consumers included residential communities, power plants, a hospital and a food manufacturer. National Grid’s Northport power plant alone used 303 million gallons, more than triple its consumption a decade ago.

The findings come as experts warn that Long Island’s aquifer is under stress, with excessive pumping contributing to saltwater intrusion and declining groundwater levels.

The water authority says previous efforts to work with some of its largest customers on conservation fell short, but it hopes to restart those discussions.
