Somerville is redesigning Tufts Street with tighter turns and narrower lanes to slow traffic.

For years, cars driving onto Tufts Street had it easy. A gently curved entrance allowed for a smooth turn that gave way to a wide, linear road, with just some narrow sidewalks on either side.

It was the way you would build it if you wanted to make it as easy as possible to drive. But that is no longer what the densest city in New England wants.

“Tight corners, narrow geometry, narrow lanes are designed to slow down traffic,” said Brad Rawson, Somerville’s director of transportation and infrastructure. “That is the best practice around North America that cities like Somerville are implementing to save lives.”
