Some IS-linked women set to return to Australia will be arrested: police
The government insists that 13 members of a group of Australian women and children linked to the self-proclaimed Islamic State group who are en route to Australia have not received assistance to return.
SBS News understands the group is expected to arrive on Thursday night.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said “if they have committed crimes, they can expect to face the full force of the law without exception,” he said.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) commissioner Krissy Barret confirmed that some individuals would be arrested and charged. However, she would not say how many or when the arrests would occur in order “to protect” several ongoing AFP investigations.
She said others would “face continued investigations” after they arrive in Australia, and the children returning with the cohort would be “asked to undergo community integration programs, therapeutic support and countering violent extremism programs”.
Australian Security Intelligence Organisation director-general of security Mike Burgess said the arrival of the cohort will not raise the current terrorism threat level.
Members of this group’s extended family have been trying to help them return to Australia, with a failed attempt in February.
They have consistently said the women will comply with any legal directions and Australian law once they arrive.
