Shocking discovery on Melbourne’s western fringe
Books, shoes, blankets, toilets, couches and mattresses are littered among piles of rubbish on a dirt road in Tarneit. In disturbing footage captured this week by news.com.au.
More than 500m of litter has collected next to lush farmland in the makeshift tip almost 30km west of the Melbourne CBD. Among the piles of rubbish are entire family photo albums showing trips to the snow, the Sydney Opera House and overseas. One pile, standing 10-feet tall, has been there so long that a tiger snake was coiled at its base beneath a blanket. A viral video shot earlier this week was removed from Facebook because it contained anti-immigration and racially-charged language. But the contents of the video, which sparked outrage from viewers, have been confirmed by news.com.au. At the end of the dirt road is a sign that reads visitors: “Stop. Dumping of Rubbish and Unwanted Goods is PROBITED”. It warns of fines up to $9087 and suggests the area “may be under surveillance”. But no cameras were visible when we visited.
