Security in Europe and Asia is more connected than ever | News in Depth
Could Taiwan become the next Ukraine? And why is the security of Europe and Asia increasingly intertwined? In News in Depth, Katsuya Tsukamoto, Chief of the National Security Policy Division at the National Institute for Defense Studies, points to the unprecedented military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, as well as China’s support for Russia’s war effort.
According to Tsukamoto, European and Indo-Pacific security are now more interconnected than ever before. Japan is also drawing important lessons from the war in Ukraine, particularly regarding the use of drones and the need to prepare for prolonged conflicts.
Tsukamoto does not rule out the possibility of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan and argues that Tokyo must prepare for the worst-case scenario, one in which Russia, China, and North Korea take coordinated actions in different parts of the world. At the same time, he stresses that Japan must be ready to defend itself even if U.S. support becomes more limited.
