Sampa the Great on Zamrock, finding her voice and channelling her musical heritage
Sampa the Great says a lot has changed in her career since discovering her uncle was one of the founding members of pioneering Zamrock band WITCH.
The Zambian-born singer and rapper says it’s a connection that’s brought a sense of purpose and authenticity to her music that’s helped her to find her voice.
“Finding that this is actually in my blood, it’s given me more of a sense of ownership,” she says.
It’s an artistic transformation that’s culminated in her latest album, Nu Zamrock, which fuses psychedelic rock, rap, funk and traditional Zambian sounds.
SBS World News spoke with Sampa the Great ahead of the album’s release, to discuss relocating from Australia to Zambia, women claiming space in music and expanding Zamrock.
