* Mourners at the memorial service of one of two women who were shot dead during a shooting in Reiger Park east of Johannesburg have appealed to residents not to protect perpetrators. A memorial service in honour of Roleen Lessing was held this evening. Two police officer from the Anti-Gang Unit were also killed in the shooting.
* The National Women’s Parliament convened at the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley today as part of South Africa’s August 2026 Women’s Month. Marking exactly 70 years since the landmark 1956 Women’s March, the event brought together lawmakers, activists and civil society to review the constitutional promises made to women.
* South African government leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa and Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, have promised policy reforms and market unbundling to address soaring tariffs. Ramaphosa says the South African Wholesale Electricity Market will begin its operations in the coming year.
* Zambians have voted in an elections to choose the president and parliament, with more than eight million voters registered to cast their ballots. Polls opened at 06:00 local time, though some experienced delays and closed at three hours ago. The vote is seen as a test of Zambia’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, amid concerns that political freedoms are being undermined while unemployment and the rising cost of living remain major issues for voters.
