Russia wants NATO pushed back in Eastern Europe | News in Depth
Diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine are gaining momentum across three cities. Brussels is working on security guarantees, Abu Dhabi is preparing for direct negotiations, and a possible summit in Shenzhen could bring together Trump, Putin and Xi. Europe and Ukraine’s position is clear: nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine, and nothing about Europe without Europe.
But the United States may see things differently. White House representative Jared Kushner suggested that Europe’s security architecture is part of the discussion. However, as Marcin Zaborowski, TVP World Europe Editor, explains on News in Depth, this effectively refers to Russia’s demands to limit NATO’s presence on the territory of countries along the Alliance’s eastern flank and suggests discussions are taking place about the security of Central Europe while the region itself is effectively not at the table.
According to Zaborowski, particularly troubling signals have emerged from Washington, indicating that the talks may go far beyond Ukraine itself and extend to the future shape of Europe’s security architecture. At the same time, he stresses that Europe has real leverage, finances a significant part of Ukraine’s defense effort, and continues to invest in its own security. For that reason, it cannot accept decisions affecting its future security without its own direct involvement.
