Russia challenges the international legal order | Eastern Express
Russia’s parliament has approved a law that allows the Kremlin to deploy military forces abroad in order to protect Russian citizens who are facing arrest or prosecution. On paper, the law is framed as a protection measure. However, critics argue that it could be used to intimidate foreign governments, international courts, and smaller states near Russia’s borders. This comes amid growing international legal pressure on Moscow and existing ICC warrants against Vladimir Putin. In this episode of Eastern Express, host Benjamin Lee and his guest, Paul Goble, Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, discuss how legal pressure, deterrence, and power politics collide.
