Reed Dance | Maidens celebrate purity, unity, and cultural pride – Jayed Paulse reports
About 30 000 AmaZulu maidens are expected to take part in today’s Umkhosi Womhlanga – Reed Dance ceremony at the Emashobeni royal palace near Pongola.
Royal household spokesperson Prince Thulani Zulu says the ceremony at the new venue is expected to be much shorter than the ones previously held at the Enyokeni Palace in Nongoma.
He says this is because the river from which the maidens will be fetching the reeds is only 200m away from the grounds where the ceremony will be held.
At Enyokeni, maidens had to walk a kilometre uphill to the palace. Prince Thulani Zulu says it seemed a tall order to organise the ceremony at the new palace when the king made the announcement a month ago. Let us listen in.
