Protesters and police clash in India during another round of youth-led demonstrations

Police in India are again being accused of using excessive force against student protesters, this time in the eastern state of Jharkhand.

Police used tear gas, water cannons and batons to disperse thousands of youth protesters as they tried to march to the state’s parliament while it was in session.

Students and young people have been demonstrating in the state’s capital, Ranchi, since late last month over allegations of wrongdoing in a public service recruitment exam.

The protesters are calling for an overhaul of the state’s examination system, cancellation of some tests and an investigation by federal police.

The latest protest follows weeks-long demonstrations in Delhi which forced the resignation of India’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the leaking of a medical exam paper.
