At least 19 people were killed when police in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, opened fire on demonstrators. The so-called Gen Z protest on September 9, 2025, was against government plans to regulate social media, including by blocking some of the world’s largest platforms such as Facebook, X and YouTube. Tens of thousands of protesters had converged around the parliament building when riot police started firing at the crowd. In addition to the dead, at least 145 people were wounded. Authorities said the social media platforms failed to register and submit to government oversight, but critics have accused the government of censorship and corruption.
