Poland’s former justice minister fleeing to U.S. benefits no one | News in Depth
Poland’s former right-wing justice minister, Zbigniew Ziobro, who has been accused of abusing his power, pressuring him to seek asylum in Viktor Orbán’s Hungary, has now found himself with the U.S., arriving on a visa reportedly signed by President Donald Trump himself. What does this mean for the relationship between Warsaw and Washington?
According to Stuart Dowell, TVP World’s Political Editor, “It raises a very alarming question: to what extent [the Polish government] can implement its own policies and election promises. And one of the election promises was to bring accountability to members of the former government, who were accused of wrongdoing. Like Zbigniew Ziobro.”
Would putting Ziobro before a Polish court help boost the government’s chances in next year’s elections or make him a political martyr? Should the Polish right support Ziobro or sweep him under the rug? And how is it that a man who is supposed to be a fugitive from justice is allowed to travel around the world so freely?
Join our host, Marie Kato, and her guest as they dive into the Polish-U.S. relationship, the apparent shortcomings of the Polish prosecution in seeking Ziobro’s arrest, and the former minister’s future as a political commentator for “Poland’s Fox News.”
