Palestinians mark Nakba Day as Jewish community celebrate Independence Day
Palestinians throughout the occupied West Bank and Gaza have marked the 78th anniversary of Nakba Day. The day follows Israel’s Independence Day on 14 May.
On May 15 1948 hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were forced from their homes during the war surrounding Israel’s creation as a state.
Palestinians refer to the displacement during the war that followed Israel’s establishment as the ‘Nakba’, which translates to ‘catastrophe’ in Arabic.
Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, but the holiday, like all national holidays, is observed according to the lunar Hebrew calendar and was marked by officially in April by Israel.
The Nakba has been one of the defining experiences for Palestinians, helping to shape their national identity and casting its shadow on their conflicted relationship with Israel in the decades since.
