Origin CEO apologises, says company has changed security settings after data breach | The Business

Origin Energy believes the information of approximately 900,000 current and former customers was accessed during a recent data security breach.
The energy provider confirmed it first became aware of a potential security threat in early July but initially did not believe it was credible. Then three weeks later, it received new information that indicated a potential security incident may have occurred.
The following day, it confirmed it was working to establish how many customers were affected, which it now believes is about 900,000.
The company has urged customers to be vigilant to scams and said specialist identity and cyber support services were available to affected customers.

“We have now completed the initial phase of our review into Origin’s customer data security incident,” Origin chief executive Frank Calabria said in a statement.
Customers whose information has been accessed will be contacted, Origin said, and customer support hours extended.
Mr Calabria rebuked suggestions that the company took its eye off the ball or erred in its approach when dealing with the breach, particularly after it told the ASX no financial details had been compromised, before backtracking a day later.
“We were being transparent as we worked through the investigation. That’s still the status today,” he told The Business.
“We’re communicating, we’ve been working through all the facts, we’ve completed the initial phase of our investigation and review and that’s led to us communicating with the 900,000 customers.”

Asked if the company rushed its response, Mr Calabria said the characterisation was wrong.

“I don’t think that’s right in terms of making missteps. I mean, we became aware of customer information last Wednesday, we communicated immediately with our market obligations, and we sent information as a precaution to all customers at that point,” he said.
