OpenAI faces criminal probe over alleged role in deadly Florida mass shooting
OpenAI is facing a criminal investigation after a deadly shooting at Florida State University last year, which killed two people and injured six others.
Florida officials say the investigation will determine whether a chatbot provided advice to the alleged gunman.
Investigators say there is evidence the accused gunman used ChatGPT to help him carry out the shooting.
Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier says prosecutors reviewed chat logs that discussed what type of gun to use, whether the weapon would be effective at short range, and the best time of day for the shooting.
“ChatGPT advised on the location and time of day where he would encounter the most people. ChatGPT also advised on how many people he should kill if he wanted to get national news,” he said.
The company says it continues to cooperate with authorities and, in a statement to Fox News, claims ChatGPT is not responsible.
