Opal system receives $820 million overhaul | 7NEWS

The New South Wales Opal card system is receiving an $820 million upgrade to digitise the ticketing platform into a cloud-based account system. The overhaul will replace 25,000 card readers, introduce an improved app with personalised trip alerts and automatic fare adjustments, and install information screens on nearly 5,000 buses to eliminate ghost buses. The software-based upgrades represent the biggest change to Sydney’s public transport ticketing system in over a decade, with completion expected over the next two years.
