Number Of The Number | R3.24 | 1 June 2026
R3.24c is today’s Number of the Day.
Diesel drivers finally get some relief, with diesel dropping by as much as R3.24 per litre in June. But the pump-price story is not all good news. Petrol is still going up by R1.43 per litre for both grades.
Gareth Edwards and Francis Herd break down why South Africa is seeing two different fuel stories at once.
Francis explains the diesel drop in real terms, using an 80-litre tank to show how the saving could work out to roughly R260 less on a full fill. For diesel drivers, truck operators and businesses that rely on transport, that is not small change.
But the conversation quickly moves beyond the forecourt. Gareth and Francis unpack why petrol is rising, how the rand helped soften the blow, and how the reduction in fuel levy relief changed the final price.
The bigger question is what happens next. Diesel is an industrial fuel, which means lower prices could matter for food and logistics. But will consumers actually feel that relief before the next fuel-price shock arrives?
R3.24c is relief. It is also a warning.
