New Zealand welcomes in 2026 with fireworks from Auckland Sky Tower as NYE celebrations begin

NEW Zealand have rung in 2026 with a spectacular firework display as parties erupted across the world.

Thousands of revellers cheered and threw their hands in the air at public displays as clocks chimed across New Zealand, where midnight local time is 11am in the UK.

Fireworks shot into the air as the annual display illuminated the night sky behind partygoers.

Kiritimati Island – also known as Christmas Island – and a string of 10 other mostly uninhabited islands in the central Pacific Ocean were the first to ring in 2026.

New Zealand’s Chatham Island was already in 2026 a few minutes before the mainland.

The remote archipelago, in the Pacific Ocean, is home to about 600 people.

Tonga, and Samoa are also currently celebrating the arrival of 2026, before Eastern Australia and then Central Australia join in on the fun.

An early evening firework display has already lit up the night sky above the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, giving fans a taste of what is to come.

Generally, countries furthest to the west on a UK map will be the last to ring in the New Year.

Two uninhabited islands named Baker Island and Howland Island, southwest of Hawaii, will be the last to see 2026 in.
