National Rail Master Plan development commences
The Department of Transport has commenced the development of the 1.9 trillion rand National Rail Master Plan.
The plan endeavours to restore rail as the backbone mode of transport by 2050.
In the Northern Cape, the role of the main rail artery, transporting mainly manganese ore between Hotazel and the ports of Gqeberha, has been overtaken by road transport.
This has detrimental effects on the sustainability and safety of roads.
