‘More work to be done’ after Rubio meets Ukrainian officials in Florida

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to the media in Hallandale Beach, Florida after a round of talks with Ukrainian representatives. Their focus has been reaching a peace agreement that ends the ongoing war with President Vladimir Putin and Russia. The meeting comes after Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s top negotiator, recently resigned after anti-corruption agencies raided his home. Today, national security council secretary Rustem Umerov, led the talks for Ukraine.

“The end goal is obviously not just the end of the war. Obviously, that’s essential and fundamental. We want to see the end of the killing and the death and the suffering, and I’m sure the Ukrainian side, I know they do as well,” said Secretary of State Rubio in an opening statement. “They want peace. But it’s also about securing an end to the war that leaves Ukraine sovereign and independent and with an opportunity at real prosperity.”

“There are a lot of moving parts, and obviously there’s another party involved here that will have to be a part of the equation, and that will continue later this week, when Mr. Witkoff travels to Moscow, although we’ve also been in touch in varying degrees with the Russian side, but we have a pretty good understanding of their views as well,” Rubio told reporters.
