More arrests expected as RTMC nabs licence fraud mastermind: Simon Zwane explains
A major breakthrough has been made in the fight against corruption in South Africa’s vehicle licensing system after authorities arrested the alleged ringleader of a multimillion-rand syndicate operating across Gauteng and the Free State.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says the group used stolen NaTIS login credentials, bogus companies, deceased people’s identities and manipulated vehicle classifications to evade licence fees, while also fraudulently issuing roadworthy certificates.
The arrest follows a three-year investigation involving the RTMC, Hawks and SAPS, with more arrests expected.
