Air carrier, FlySafair has announced that it will introduce a temporary fuel surcharge to ticket prices in response to the increase in fuel prices amid the conflict in the Middle East. South African Airways, however, has communicated that its prices will remain stable as it has sufficient fuel arrangements in place to support its flight schedule. This echoes the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources assurances that there is currently no immediate risk of fuel shortages in South Africa. All this has brought into the spotlight South Africa’s vulnerability to market disruptions elsewhere in the world, as well as the potential cost of energy dependence for the rest of the continent.
