Long Island’s “Shark Man” Charged With Capturing Great White

A Massapequa man known as the “Long Island Shark Man” is facing charges after allegedly capturing a great white shark off Cape Cod.

Christopher Stefanou, 30, is accused of using prohibited fishing equipment, including a drone, to capture a protected great white shark known as “Aaron the Shark” last October.

Prosecutors say Stefanou and his crew dragged the shark onto a beach, posed for photos and celebrated before releasing it back into the water.

Authorities learned of the incident after video of the capture was posted on social media.

Stefanou faces several charges, including animal cruelty and illegal shark fishing.

His attorney says the capture was unintentional, the shark was safely released and Stefanou has spent years working to protect sharks.

A judge ordered Stefanou to surrender his fishing license and stop fishing in Massachusetts waters while the case proceeds.
