LA’s Nithya Raman lays out priorities after victory in mayor’s race
Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman unseated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, becoming the city’s first challenger to oust a sitting mayor in more than two decades. Bass conceded the race after updated vote tallies from the municipal runoff election showed Raman leading. A 45-year-old democratic socialist and Harvard-educated urban planner, Raman focused her campaign on affordable housing, homelessness and the city’s recovery from devastating wildfires. Her victory follows a wave of progressive municipal wins across the country, solidifying her place as the first socialist mayor in Los Angeles history. Political journalist Jon Regardie joins LiveNOW’s Alexandra Goldberg to discuss Raman’s upcoming tenure as mayor and what it means for the city of Los Angeles.
