Lala officially strengthens into Category 1 hurricane
Lala has officially crossed the threshold to become a Category 1 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Power outages are mounting across Hawaii as Hurricane Lala brings increasingly strong winds and heavy rain to the islands.
Nearly 24,000 customers statewide are without electricity, according to PowerOutage.us, with the Big Island bearing the brunt of the outages.

The National Hurricane Center says tropical-storm conditions — including gusts reaching hurricane force — are already occurring on the Big Island, particularly in higher terrain. Forecasters warn winds could continue to strengthen as Lala interacts with the island this afternoon and evening.
