Labor flags negative gearing changes from next July
Labor plans to introduce changes to negative gearing that would apply only to properties acquired from budget night onwards and would take effect next July.
The proposed arrangements are intended to limit increased investor activity in the existing property market.
Tax concessions for investors who negatively gear new builds and apartments would remain in place as part of efforts to support the supply of new housing.
The government states that the proposed property tax changes are aimed at achieving longer-term intergenerational outcomes rather than generating short-term revenue increases.
