Kasparov: Trump’s strategic failure is separating the wars in Iran and Ukraine | On The Record
In this episode of On The Record, host Adam Jasser sits down with Garry Kasparov to unpack what the Russian dissident calls Donald Trump’s biggest geopolitical mistake.
According to the chess grand master, treating the wars in Iran and Ukraine as separate conflicts ignores a fundamental reality: they are deeply interconnected through Russia’s influence, military cooperation, and global power dynamics.
Kasparov argues that by failing to recognize this link, the U.S. weakens its own position and strengthens Vladimir Putin. He points out that Iran’s military capabilities, including drone warfare it employed against American assets and interests in the region, are closely tied to Russian technology and support, making any attempt to isolate these conflicts strategically flawed. At the same time, he criticizes the lack of clear objectives, coordination with allies, and overall strategy in U.S. actions, warning that without a coherent plan, even the greatest military in the world cannot achieve success.
Kasparov points out Europe’s growing sense of urgency, stating that Europe is already at war, and more and more leaders are beginning to understand it. He emphasizes that Putin is not seeking compromise but victory, aiming to destroy Ukrainian statehood and expand Russia’s influence further. In his view, this is not a situation for half-measures or illusions about negotiation, but a moment that requires clarity, unity, and decisive action.
Kasparov also offers a stark assessment of American domestic politics, suggesting that current decisions may lead to major political consequences during the upcoming midterm elections in November, saying: “Americans can expect an earthquake and Republicans might be wiped out because of their actions.”
