ISIS-linked families leave Syrian refugee camp to travel home to Australia | ABC NEWS
A group of Australian families with ties to former Islamic State fighters have begun another attempt to travel home to Australia after spending years stranded in a Syrian refugee camp.
The ABC can reveal four women, along with nine of their children and grandchildren, are on their way to Syria’s capital Damascus and will try to travel home to Australia.
Their new attempt to leave Syria comes months after their case sparked a political furore in Australia in February, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saying he had no sympathy for their plight.
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles was tight lipped on the matter on Saturday morning, but denied government involvement.
“The government is not participating in the repatriation of people in this circumstance,” he told Weekend Breakfast.
