Is Israel running out of friends? | DW News
Israel’s military has scored major victories in its wars against Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran. But the country’s international standing has suffered sharply. Several governments have accused Israel of genocide, a charge it vehemently rejects, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court. Public opinion has also shifted against Israel in many parts of the world. The massive death toll among Palestinian civilians, the images of widespread destruction in Gaza, and concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the occupied West Bank have fueled growing criticism across Europe and the United States, placing governments under increasing pressure over their support for Israel. Yet key strategic partnerships remain remarkably resilient. The United States continues to provide military support, some European countries are expanding security cooperation, and Arab states that normalized relations with Israel have largely maintained those ties despite the war in Gaza in the wake of the October 7, 2023 attack against Israel from Hamas. In this video, we examine the forces shaping Israel’s international standing, the impact of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, and whether Israel can rebuild support abroad while preserving its most important alliances.
