Is a Trump impeachment likely as inflation crisis leaves Republicans facing midterm wipeout?
Donald Trump won the White House for a second term in 2024, promising lower prices and no new wars. But with a fortnight to the midterm elections, the Iran conflict and a soaring oil price are weighing heavily on his approval rating. President of Washington-based conservative think tank, The American Enterprise Institute, Robert Doar caught up with David Taylor on The Business while visiting Australia. He says while the president is powerful in the United States, he faces political challenges ahead. He says a Trump impeachment may be pushed by the Democrats.
“In order to really conduct an impeachment that makes any sense, you need to have some hope that you’ll get two-thirds of the vote in the Senate and you’d need Republican votes for that. And that’s not going to happen.” But, he says, “… the Democrats may try to do it anyway because they’re angry.”
Robert Doar says Americans are focused the on cost of living, job availability, the strength of the economy, and America’s role in the world. However, the United States, and the global economy, may need to absorb more Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. “They might {hike interest rates} next time. They certainly will do it the one after that. And you have to get inflation under control, and that’s the Federal Reserve’s job. I think Kevin Warsh sees that as his job,” he said.
