Washington is on high alert after a new U.S. intelligence memo warned that alleged Iranian assassination plots targeting American diplomats and officials overseas have reached “advanced stages.” The warning comes as the Trump administration orders reductions in diplomatic personnel across multiple Middle Eastern countries amid fears of a wider regional conflict.
According to a memo obtained by Axios, Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warned Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Iran has substantially increased efforts to target American officials. Meanwhile, the U.S. is reducing its diplomatic footprint in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Lebanon, Qatar and Jordan, citing threats from Iran and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
