A London van driver who swerved into a cyclist while transporting blood to a hospital has been jailed, the Metropolitan Police said, releasing video showing the shocking incident from March 2024.
Police said Mark Okotie was jailed for over three years on October 27, after he was found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court.
Detective Inspector Steven Andrews, who led the investigation, said: “Okotie was driving a vehicle carrying blood destined for hospital patients in need. Instead of continuing a journey intended to support potentially lifesaving treatment, he chose to place someone else’s life at risk.”
The cyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with multiple pelvic fractures and a fractured femur. In a victim statement, the cyclist described how the attack continues to affect him more than two years on: “I’ve always been quite an active person so that was the main impact, specifically riding my bike, running, and working out. I used to go jogging every morning before work but I’ve not been able to do that since,” he said.
