Hong Kong hot-air balloon festival grounded before take-off

The organiser of Hong Kong’s hot-air balloon festival has apologised for suspending its tethered rides after failing to secure a relevant permit in time. It announced on September 4, 2025 – the first day of the festival – that it would cancel its tethered rides as its current permit only allowed professional aviation technicians with licences to ride on the balloon. The event organiser ran into more trouble the following day when scorching weather forced them to deflate all balloons on display.
