A major fire has badly damaged the Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle’s Nest, Adolf Hitler’s former alpine retreat in Bavaria, Germany. Police have detained a 33-year-old German man near the scene as investigators examine the cause of the blaze and whether there was a political motive.
The fire broke out late Friday night above Berchtesgaden, with around 200 emergency personnel deployed as difficult mountain terrain slowed efforts to control the flames. Authorities say the historic site was left largely destroyed, while prosecutors revealed the suspect may have signs of mental illness and diminished responsibility.
Built by the Nazis in 1938, the Eagle’s Nest survived World War II and later became a popular tourist destination and mountain inn. The site has long been part of a wider debate in Germany and Austria over how to preserve places linked to Hitler and the Nazi regime without allowing them to become symbols for extremists.
