Historic victories bring greater diversity to U.S. Congress and Senate
The 2026 U.S. midterm elections brought a series of historic firsts, breaking new ground in American politics and changing the makeup of Congress and state governments.
Among the landmark victories, Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, while Georgia elected the country’s first Black female governor. Texas also elected its first Latina governor, and Florida its first Black governor.
The results mark a milestone in political representation across the country, with candidates from different backgrounds making history in both national and state-level races.
