Heidedal residents say quarry has claimed lives

Ten months after the tragic drowning of a 20-year-old man at the Witherow Quarry in Heidedal, the Mangaung Metro Municipality has approached the High Court seeking an order to have the site permanently secured.

The municipality wants the quarry owners to take urgent steps to prevent further loss of life, citing inadequate security at the abandoned site.

Heidedal residents say the quarry has claimed the lives of several young people over the years.

The site was previously operated by Corobrick as a commercial clay-mining operation.

After mining ceased, the property was left abandoned.
