A State of Emergency was declared for the Wellington region in New Zealand on Monday, April 20, as a slow-moving weather system produced heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Flash flooding affected large swathes of the city, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand told local media it “received about 200 calls relating to the weather in the Wellington region since 3am.”

“We are advising residents in low-lying, flood-prone, or landslip-prone areas – especially those who have experienced flooding before – to consider relocating for the next 24 hours,” the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office wrote to Facebook on Monday afternoon.

Video taken by the New Zealand Professional Firefighters’ Union shows flooding inside Wellington Central Fire Station.
