French student protest leaders meet with Prime Minister
French student leaders met with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to demand more teachers and renovations to schools as protests enter their second month.
The demonstrations, now occurring across France, started just after students returned from the summer break, when pupils from Lycée Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry in Créteil launched blockades against staffing shortages, a lack of substitute teachers, and dilapidated facilities following recent heatwaves.
The protests broadened to society-wide demands for cost of living relief, with some leading to violence and looting across several major French cities.
