Farage’s outsider act won’t work when running against Binface | David Dunn
Facing scrutiny over funding received from dubious sources, Reform U.K.’s leader Nigel Farage triggered a by-election in his Clacton constituency in the hopes of making the vote a show of public support for himself and distracting the public from his shady dealings. But no mainstream party put forward their candidates. The result: Farage’s main contender is Count Binface, a comedian posing as a 5,000-year-old galactic warlord. And sporting a trashcan on his head.
“It’s almost a display of English eccentricity. (…) Rather than the rather pompous position that Farage took about him taking on the establishment, in the end he’s taken on a dustbin,” said David Dunn, Professor of International Politics at the University of Birmingham. “Farage tried to portray himself as the outsider. Well, actually here Binface is the outsider. (…) He’s the outsider rather than the establishment figure, the politician, the leader of a political party, the millionaire, several times over.”
“So the intent of this election for Farage has backfired for him. And Binface has been the vehicle to allow that to backfire in this way,” Dunn added.
