eNCA News Bite | Food-safety failures, Trump election claims and Mi Casa’s Mandela Day concert | …
It’s Friday, 17 July, and this is News Bite (https://www.enca.com/news-bite-podcast) with Marcelle Gordon.
A Public Protector report says unsafe food handling has left Gauteng residents vulnerable to food poisoning. Kholeka Gcaleka’s investigation (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/public-protector-release-food-poisoning-probe-report) followed at least 23 children’s deaths linked to contaminated snacks from spaza shops and street vendors in 2024. It also found failures in school feeding schemes, weak food-safety enforcement and evidence of business fronting.
IDAC head Andrea Johnson (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/idac-head-andrea-johnson-back-work-subpoenaed-appear-madlanga-next-week) has been subpoenaed to appear before the Madlanga Commission after missing testimony. She faces misconduct allegations, including an alleged improper relationship with police general Feroz Khan. Former Hawks officer Mbongeleni Mpangase testified about an Isiphingo drug bust (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/livestream-port-shepstone-drug-bust-focus) and conflict involving Colonel Gavin Jacobs.
Small Business Development Minister Stella Ndabeni says municipalities must cut red tape holding back small businesses and informal traders.
In Britain, Andy Burnham has been elected Labour Party leader, (https://www.enca.com/news/uk-labour-party-crown-burnham-leader-and-next-pm) clearing the way for the Greater Manchester mayor to replace Keir Starmer as Prime Minister on Monday. Burnham says he wants to “fix the big things” politics has neglected.
Donald Trump has again claimed China interfered in the 2020 US election. The allegations remain unsubstantiated; more than 60 court cases and Justice Department investigations (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/trump-revives-election-fraud-claims-ahead-us-midterms) found no fraud. Trump says declassified intelligence supports his claim, while the US intelligence community found no evidence of Chinese interference in 2020.
In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Judge André Le Grange has reserved judgment in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s bid to suspend Parliament’s Impeachment Committee. (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/no-legal-basis-committee-not-press-ahead-gana) A ruling is expected by the end of next week, while the committee will continue unless ordered otherwise. Thousands of UNISA students are also facing NSFAS payment backlogs, with Deputy Minister Yusuf Cassim pushing for systemic fixes.
SPORT
Malcolm Marx says his Player of the Year award means nothing as the Springboks prepare to face Wales in the Nations Championship. Lungi Ngidi won three CSA awards, (https://www.enca.com/sport-top-stories/markram-and-wolvaardt-sweep-top-honours-csa-awards) including Men’s T20 Player of the Year. Human Rights Watch wants FIFA to hold a minute’s silence before the Spain-Argentina World Cup final after two people were shot dead by US immigration agents this month.
And finally, Mi Casa, Jesse Clegg, Sipho Mchunu and Zakes Bantwini are taking South African music to Trafalgar Square for a Mandela Day concert marking 30 years of the Constitution.
