Businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused have pleaded not guilty as their trial begins in the Johannesburg High Court.
Matlala, his wife Tsakani and others face 25 charges, including attempted murder, money laundering, fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
In a separate case, gemstones-heist whistleblower “Witness K” appeared alongside suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi with her face covered. Her lawyers cited serious safety risks.
Former Miss South Africa contestant and Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina has taken her fight to remain in South Africa to the Cape Town Regional Court. Home Affairs declared her a prohibited person after finding that her mother fraudulently registered her birth.
The ANC is finalising its mayoral candidates less than 100 days before the local government elections. Johannesburg is a key battleground after Mayor Dada Morero’s crisis-hit term.
Government is pressing ahead with plans to expand South Africa’s nuclear energy programme. Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has reaffirmed a commitment to procure 5.2 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity.
In Britain, Andy Burnham has become the fifth Prime Minister in four years, replacing Keir Starmer.
In other news we’re keeping an eye on, the Reserve Bank announces its interest-rate decision on Thursday after raising the repo rate to 7% in May. National Treasury has released all or part of the July equitable share for 42 municipalities.
African Swine Fever outbreaks have reduced pig numbers and could push pork prices higher. Pork sold through formal retailers remains safe.
SPORT
Spain are world champions after Ferran Torres scored the only goal of an extra-time final against Argentina. Spain swept the individual honours, while Kylian Mbappé won the Golden Boot with 10 goals. Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino were booed during the medal ceremony, before Trump lingered as Spain lifted the trophy. Marc Cucurella praised Spain’s “amazing football” ahead of the team’s homecoming.
And finally, the Junior Springboks are home after defending their U20 Rugby World Championship title with victory over France.
