Independent economist Chris Richardson argues Australia’s housing crisis requires federal intervention to force state and local governments to approve more residential development, as interest rate increases of 4 per cent since May 2022 have failed to slow property prices rising from $930,000 to $1.1 million. The Albanese government is forecast to miss its target of 1.2 million new homes by 2029. Master Builders Australia advocates for prioritising construction workers in skilled migration, estimating each migrant tradie will build 21 detached homes and contribute $1.9 million to the economy over a 30-year career.
