Eastern Cape, SASSA launch R5m project to tackle poverty at Kalalo Village in Mqanduli

The Eastern Cape Social Development Department has initiated a nearly R5 million project to fight poverty and malnutrition at Kalalo Village in Mqanduli.

Social development MEC Bukiwe Fanta says the newly launched project will focus on malnutrition, food security and elderly neglect.

The project coincides with the Child Protection Month campaign which was launched in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this month.

In its 2023 report on child malnutrition, the South African Human Rights Commission identified Mqanduli as an area with disproportionately high child poverty rates.

SABC News Reporter, Nomzwanele Mngoma has the story.
