The tremors collapsed many buildings and Yatsushiro Shrine, and damaged a bridge in the Kumamoto south-western prefecture.
Rescue workers have been working through the night to search for survivors, as Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ordered hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate.
