Dior, Hermès, and the business of being a Russian widow | Break the Fake

A Russian soldier is killed fighting in Ukraine, and his widow gets a new wardrobe. Apparently, that’s what they call a happy ending in Russia.

A Russian widow has revealed how she spent the compensation paid out after her husband’s death: Dior dresses, a Hermès handbag, luxury boots, regular manicures, and expensive beauty treatments. The nearly $35,000 memorial she built for him? She says that came entirely out of her own pocket. How considerate of the war economy.

While the Kremlin preaches patriotism, glorifies sacrifice, and promises generous rewards to soldiers’ families, this widow’s shopping list offers a rather different picture of life after the ultimate sacrifice.

It seems that in Russia, a soldier may lose his life, but at least someone gets to upgrade their handbag collection.

Join Benjamin Lee in a new episode of Break the Fake to see how Putin’s war compensation turned into a designer shopping spree, and what it says about the price of sacrifice in today’s Russia.
